Bloggers Quilt Festival Fall 2013

Hello everyone

I only discovered yesterday that 2 entries are allowed into the Bloggers Quilt Festival, the twice yearly quiltfest kindly organised by Amy from Amy's Creative Side

I have decided my second entry will be my Hummingbirds piece in the Wall Hanging quilt category.

It measures 27" x 35" and I've only finished it in the last few weeks.   The appliqued hummingbirds were supposed to go in the border of another quilt I was making but they didn't look right.  This is how this piece came to be.

I appliqued the birds, flowers and leaves using bondaweb then with the work in a slat frame, I hand embroidered over the top.   Took quite a few weeks but was worth it.

I made some crumby/string blocks for the border then it was ready to quilt.

This is the finished result:

I hope you can find the time to pop over and look at all the quilts.  There are really some amazing entries - very inspiring.
Thanks for stopping by,
Rhianon.

Bloggers Quilt Festival Fall 2013

Hello there,

The leaves are falling from the trees and that can only mean one thing - it's time for the  Bloggers Quilt Festival.  Kindly organised by Amy from Amy's Creative Side, it is a twice yearly feast for the eyes.

Competition is always stiff because there are just so many talented people out there.

I've decided to make "Enchanted Garden" my entry.   I would like this to be judged in the Favourite Home Machine Quilted Quilt category.

Its quite a big quilt measuring 79" by 86"
I got the star blocks from a Carol Doak book and the rest is my own design.

Machine appliqued flowers and butterflies in the center and borders.
I free motion quilted this on my domestic machine.  all the feathers are freehand and unmarked..

This is a good shot of the whole quilt.  Here I was basting it out in the garden in the summer.

                                                                       Feathers galore!

More feathers in the final border..

So why not head over to Amy's and check out all the beautiful entries.  Of course I would like you to vote for mine if you think it would be a worthy winner.
Thanks for stopping by.

Hummingbirds -Finished!

Its been a while since I posted about this and I've only shown snippets.
I am very happy to say that this piece is now finished.

It measures 27" x 35" and is bound with a plain dark blue cotton.  Sorry I don't have a photo of the edges.

I have used the traditional; method of trapunto ( ie, stuffing from the back) to fill out the body of the birds.
They were sagging a little and needed it!

The border is made up of crumb blocks and the whole piece was free motion quilted on my domestic machine.

These photos were taken in direct sunlight - I love how it shows up the quilting and the texture of the hand embroidery on the birds.

It is now packed away and ready for my display.  I'm working like a crazy woman and will have lots to show you over the coming weeks/months.
'Til the next time.....
Happy Stitching

More Free Motion Quilting

Hi everyone

Hope you have all been having a good week.  Been very busy here, working on a couple of quilts for my display next year.
I've decided not to show everything I'm working on in its entirety, so apologies for that.  I thought it would be nice to have a few pieces that people have not seen.  If you are not in the UK, don't worry, I have been taking lots of photos and will post them at some point in the future.

Lets start with the back of a quilt -

This is the center section done.
Now I had to think of a design to go in the borders lying along side this.

This is what I came up with.  I'm trying my hand at Mc Tavishing again.  I used it before on the background for Gecko Fabulous but it got covered up by the geckos and leaves so you can't see much at all.

I'm using a fabric which has glitter on it.  Looks nice but I'm not sure how wise that was as there is glitter everywhere - ie inside my machine.  I have been using the vacuum cleaner daily to clean it so it should be ok.

I've used 2 layers of Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 and all the threads are varigated Gutermans.

Its turned out to be a nice little sample.

This is a sneaky peek of the design on the quilt.  It's coming along nicely now and with a bit of a push I'm hoping to get it finished next week.
So much to do, so little time.......
Happy Quilting
Rhianon.
